四祖道信大师者。姓司马氏。世居河内。后徙于蕲州广济县。生而超异。幼慕空宗诸解脱门。宛如宿习。既见三祖嗣法。摄心无寐。胁不至席者。盖六十年。隋大业十三载。领徒众抵吉州。值群盗围城。七旬不解。万众惶怖。祖愍之。教念摩诃般若。时贼众望雉堞间。若有神兵。乃相谓曰。城中必有异人。不可攻矣。稍稍引退。唐武德甲申岁。师却返蕲。春住破头山。学侣云臻。一日往黄梅县。路逢女子。携一小儿。骨相奇秀。异乎常童。祖问曰。子何姓。答曰。姓即有不是常姓。祖曰。是何姓。答曰。是佛性。祖曰。汝无姓耶。答曰。性空故无。祖默识其法器。即俾侍者。至其母所。乞令出家。母以夙缘故。殊无难色。遂舍为弟子。以至传法付衣。偈曰。华种有生性。因地华生生。大缘与性合。当生生不生。遂以学徒委之。是为此土四祖。赞曰。少年出家利根捷疾 六十余年胁不至席 学侣云臻何待小儿 以有夙约观者不知
