金元宝 由贵重的黄金或白银制成，一般白银居多，黄金稀见。“元宝”的名称是从元代开始的，在陶宗仪的《缀耕录》中有专门记载。大意是元朝至元十三年（1276），元代士兵征服了南宋，回到扬州，丞相伯颜命令将士兵把征途中所得白银交出，加以熔化浇铸，每五十两为一锭，上写有“扬州元宝”，献给世祖。这样元宝便产生了。后来朝廷也开始铸造，民间有元宝流通。元宝作为贷币，一直通行到清代末年，以后被金银币所代替。也有的称黄金铸的为金元宝，白银铸的为银元宝。
