雅砻江下游最长支流，属长江上游水系。又名长河、白沙河，取名河水"安宁"之意。发源于冕宁县小相岭，南流至大桥始称安宁河。以大桥、德昌为界，可划分为上、中、下游3段。至小得石附近注入雅砻江，全长351公里,支流59条,流域面积1.1万平方公里。河口流量234立方米／秒,但最大与最小流量差达百倍。水力资源136万千瓦。安宁河河谷地带属宽阔地堑谷，谷底海拔1000～1900米。阶地发育，宽4～10公里,坡度平缓，面积达1800平方公里，为川西南唯一最大河谷平原。由于谷地宽展，气候温暖，灌溉便利，土壤肥沃,故耕地连片,人烟集中，农业发达，是川西南主要产粮区。
