      狭义指莎草科(Cyperaceae)中的饲用植物;广义包括灯心草科(Juncaceae)牧草,又可合称为类禾草。广布全世界,主要分布于北半球温带、寒带和高山带的潮湿和沼泽地区。莎草科植物在全世界约4000种,中国约670种。饲用价值较大的主要有苔草属(Carex)、嵩草属(Kobresia)、羊胡子草属(Eriophorum)和莎草属(Cyperus)等。在中国青藏高原的高寒草原地带,嵩草属的一些种常成为天然草地的优势植物。灯心草科全世界约400种,中国约80种,饲用价值不大。莎草科牧草多为多年生草本;茎三棱形,无节;叶线形;花极小且不明显;果实为坚果;多具根茎,再生力强。干物质中平均含粗蛋白质14.1%、粗脂肪 3.0%、无氮浸出物49.6%、粗纤维25.5%、粗灰分 7.8%。因味淡、硅酸含量较高、茎和叶较粗糙,适口性和饲用价值较差。但耐牧性强。只能用于放牧。
