固原地区位于宁夏回族自治区南部，东西南三面与甘肃毗邻，北部与本区中卫、同心两县接壤，总面积16783平方公里，辖固原、海原、西吉、隆德、彭阳、泾源县,总人口186.85万人，其中回族占47.6%,是宁夏回族自治区主要聚居区之一。
固原县历史悠久，是古丝绸之路东段北道必经之地。故史称固原“据八邵之户背,管三镇之要”,曾有七朝在此设州建郡，是历代兵家用武的重镇要塞，也是北方游牧文化与中原农耕文化的结合部。固原博物馆珍藏文物达万件，北魏墓出土的棺漆画国内罕见，北周墓发掘的波斯鎏金银壶在世界仅有。
