体形似金丝猴，鼻孔上仰，吻鼻部略向下凹，不像金丝猴那样肿胀。脸部灰白或浅蓝。头顶前部毛基金黄色，至后部逐渐变为灰白，毛尖黑色。耳缘白色，背部灰褐色。两肩之间有一白色块斑，毛长达16厘米。上肢的肩部外侧至手背，由浅灰褐色逐渐变为黑色，下肢毛色变化与上肢相同。有人认为是金丝猴的一个亚种。
栖息于海拔1700米以上的山地阔叶林中，主要在树上活动，结群生活，有季节性分群与合群现象。以多种植物的叶、芽、花、果及树皮为食。
产于贵州梵净山。黔金丝猴分布范围十分狭窄，总数仅几百只，现已建立梵净山自然保护区，对其栖息环境进行保护。
属于国家一级保护动物。
