金丝猴别名仰鼻猴。川金丝猴生存于中国四川省西部、北部山地，云杉、冷杉、槭、桦、箭竹、杜鹃等丛生的针阔混交原始林里。有时，人们听到远远传来的咔嚓、咔嚓声，走近些能辨出是在攀折树枝，却听不到任何动物叫唤声。远眺，只见皑皑白雪覆盖着山林，一年倒有近半年积雪，山境显得格外幽静。近处，在林海中抬头留神观察，才能见到树枝间穿梭闪跃而过的金灰色猴子。它就是世界上鼎鼎有名的川金丝猴，而且不论野生或饲养的，都只中国才有。
川金丝猴身被长毛，浓而厚的金灰色或金黄色背毛，长度可达20多厘米。脸庞呈蓝色，面型纯朴和蔼，还有生就了的一对朝天翘的鼻孔，所以又得了个“仰鼻猴”的名字。这个鼻子给它增添了不少憨厚稚气的神情，更惹人喜爱。
初生幼仔的毛呈乳黄色，洁净可爱。1岁以后，黑色的冠毛逐渐增多，颈侧开始有黄红色的金毛，背毛为黑褐色。随着年龄的增长，毛色继续变化，到两岁以后，全身毛色变为金黄，头顶、背部还有些黑褐色。4岁左右成熟。雄猴体大魁梧，身强力壮，更是漂亮；雌猴则斯文苗条多了。
川金丝猴有十几只一群的，也有几百只一群的。群内老幼雌雄都有。大群中还分小群，好似一个大家庭。它们成群游荡，徐徐转移，各群都有一定的活动范围和相对稳定的路线，周年来回迁移寻找食物。川金丝猴以树叶、野果、嫩枝芽为食，甚至连苔藓植物也吃。
