因明清时代为蒙古族土默特部居住地而得名。又称前套平原或呼和浩特平原。位于自治区中南部。西起包头市郊区东乌不拉沟口，东至蛮汉山，北靠大青山，南濒黄河及和林格尔黄土丘陵。东西长约330公里，南北窄，西部平均宽19公里，东部宽达200多公里总面积约1万平方公里，系由黄河及其支流大黑河冲积而成。地势西、北、东三面向南倾斜，海拔1000米左右，最低处在黄河沿岸一带。整个平原地势平坦，气候条件适宜，土壤肥沃，水源丰富，盛产小麦、玉米、甜菜、胡麻等作物和各类蔬菜，是内蒙古的“米粮川”。个别地方因排水不畅，地下水位升高，土壤发生盐碱化。
