A review of forest root respiration-determinants and response to global change;

Tree root respiration is a major contributor to soil CO 2 pools, and 2/3 of total forest soil respiration is from root respiration.

Information on root respiration and biomass are important for understanding implications of environmental change on soil carbon cycling and sequestration.

Daily and seasonal variation of soil CO2 emission fluxes were measured using close chamber method in typical crop fields in Huang-huai-hai Plain, the impacts of soil temperature and moisture on soil CO2 emission flux were analyzed respectively, and the contribution of root respiration by using the DNDC ( DeNitrification – DeComposition ) model was also discussed.

In order to determine the possibility of measuring the root respiration by using root exclusion method,we conducted field experiments to measured total soil respiration and net soil respiration in three temperate grassland communities including Leymus chinensis free-grazed steppe,stipa grandis free-grazed steppe and Leymus chinensis degenerated free-grazed steppe in the growing season, 2005.
