穿山甲多在山麓地带的草丛中或丘陵杂灌丛较潮湿的地方挖穴而居。昼伏夜出,遇敌时则蜷缩成球状。舌细长,能伸缩,带有粘性唾液,觅食时,以灵敏的嗅觉寻找蚊穴,用强健的前肢爪掘开蚁洞,将鼻吻深入洞里,用长舌舐食之。外出时,幼兽伏于母兽背尾部。以蚂蚁和白蚁为食,也食昆虫的幼虫等。发情期为4~5月份,12月至翌年的1月产仔,每年1胎,每胎1~2仔。
