| 荨麻科 Urticaceae 双子叶植物纲金缕梅亚纲的一科。常为草本，有时为灌木，稀为乔木，有的有刺毛，叶互生或对生，叶表皮有隆起的钟乳体；花极小，单性，花被单层，雄蕊与花被片同数并对生；心皮与柱头1；胚珠1枚，直立；花序常聚伞状、穗状或圆锥状，稀生于肉质花序托上；退化雌蕊常存在，退化雄蕊鳞片状。果为瘦果或肉质核果。约49属1900余种，分布全世界热带、亚热带，少数至温带地区。中国有25属350余种，主要分布长江流域以南省区。 荨麻科中的许多属，如苎麻属、水麻属、紫麻属、水丝麻属、雾水葛属、蝎子草属、荨麻属、艾麻属、锥头麻属等都为重要的纤维植物，其中苎麻、青麻和红活麻等为中国南方常见的重要栽培纤维植物。冷水花属、赤车属、楼梯草属中的一些种类，茎肉质，叶翠绿，体态奇特或有美丽的花纹，广为栽培观赏。该科的荨麻族植物具有其他高等植物所没有的独特的刺毛 ，一旦触及人或牲畜的皮肤，就会出现红斑，痛痒难忍，有的种类甚至会引起儿童或幼畜死亡。
