白掌长臂栖息于热带雨林中，树栖性，喜在树上攀爬跳跃，也能在地上双足行走，营家庭式生活。以嫩枝芽、树叶、果实、昆虫、鸟卵为食。妊娠期为7个月，每胎产1仔。
白掌长臂产于云南西南部。白掌长臂猿现存数量很少，为了保护这一濒于灭绝的稀有动物，我国已在南滚河建立了自然保护区。属于国家一级保护动物。
