1752年当瑞典植物学家奥斯伯克乘船前往中国路经爪哇时，他看到一株树木的树杆上生长出很多美丽的花朵。作为一个对热带雨林无知的北欧植物学家，他确信他发现了无叶的寄生植物新种，并把这些花命名为寄生楝(Melia parasatica)。其实，那并非寄生植物新种，而是那株树木茎干上自身开出的花朵。这个现象后来被称做老茎生花。
老茎生花是热带雨林树木的一个特殊现象。从进化观点看，花是植物适应昆虫和动物传粉者的一种器官，花在植物体上产生的位置是最能引诱和方便昆虫或动物为其传粉的位置。热带雨林中，昆虫和其它动物传粉者主要在林冠下一定高度范围活动，而成年树木的枝叶往往高不可及。老茎上生花无疑最能显露自己和使得昆虫及其它动物传粉者最易触及。
除老茎生花外，有些树木是老枝生花，而有的树木，如棕榈类植物，不仅花从茎上长出，而且还形成一个巨大下垂花序，叫鞭花。枝花和鞭花也同样是树木对昆虫传粉的一种特殊适应。
