原始腹足目鲍科的 1属。鲍的贝壳低，左侧宽大呈耳状，螺旋部很小，体螺层大，几占贝壳的全部。中国古称"鳆"。全世界有90余种，分布于太平洋、印度洋和大西洋。中国沿海已发现 7种，其中数量较大的皱纹盘鲍产于北方沿海。南方沿海有产量较多的杂色鲍和肉体肥满、产量较少、分布于珊瑚礁的耳鲍 (见彩图)等。
贝壳左侧边缘有1列圆形小孔,为呼吸排泄孔，开孔数目因种类而异；贝壳表面的颜色多样，与饵料有一定的关系，壳内有珍珠光泽。足的肌肉特别肥厚，分上下两部分，上足有许多触角，可从壳边缘小孔中伸出司感觉作用；下足扁椭圆形，适于附着和爬行。鲍栖息于潮下带潮流畅通、水质清彻、海藻繁茂的岩礁海底，喜夜间觅食，白天以发达的足部肌肉吸附在岩礁上隐伏。鲍的足部肌肉营养丰富，鲜美可口，是海味中的珍品。其贝壳称"石决明"，用作药材，有平肝潜阳、镇静、明目的功能。
