是指唐代流行的文言小说，作者大多以记、传名篇，以史家笔法，传奇闻异事。代表性作品有王度的《古镜记》、白行简的《李娃传》、杜光庭的《虬髯客传》等。唐传奇的出现，标志着我国文言小说发展以了成熟的阶段。
唐传奇的艺术成就
唐传奇指唐代流行的文言短篇小说，在六朝志怪小说的基础上，融合历史传记小说、辞赋、诗歌和明间说唱艺术而形成的新的小说文体。主要艺术成就有：
一、唐传奇的艺术成就相当高，情节的传奇性与现实性相容，情节的虚构、想象与作品的艺术性融合一体，其虚构和想象已标志着文言短篇小说创作的成就。如《柳毅传奇》写充满神话色彩的书生与龙女相恋故事，情节离奇，但人情味很重。
二、体裁丰富。有描写爱情的，如元稹的《莺莺传》、白行简的《李娃传》、蒋防的《霍小玉传》；寓言讽刺题材有沈既济的《枕中记》“黄粱梦”；历史题材陈鸿的《长恨歌传》《东城父老传》；游侠题材杜光庭的《虬髯客传》；神怪题材裴铏的《传奇》。
三、所写故事情节化、细节化，注重写人物的生活琐事，尤其注重写他们的情感生活或性情偏嗜之类的细节。
四、叙事模式由故事中心向情节中心、人物中心演进。
五、叙述语言雅俗兼采时庄时谐，用文言描写物态人情以至琐事，简洁、准确、丰富、优美，将古代散文的巨大表现力发挥到很高水平。
