   双翅目长角亚目瘿蚊科的通称。因许多种类的幼虫在植物上形成虫瘿而得名。世界性分布,全世界已知约4000种。若干种类为农、林业的重要害虫,为双翅目中一个经济上重要的大科。
   微小至中小型,身体十分纤弱,为长角亚目(蚊类)昆虫中最为纤弱的类群之一。身体淡黄色、橙黄色、红色、红褐色至黑褐色而带有某些红色色泽。卵长椭圆形,黄色、橙色、或红色。幼虫圆筒形,两端略尖,黄、橙红、粉红、或红色。完全无足。头部很小,头壳完整,骨化程度不等。
   瘿蚊的成虫脆弱,飞翔能力不强,多在幼虫生活场所附近栖息,只少数种类夜间向光。卵产于寄主植物表面、花蕾或嫩芽的隙间、树皮缝内以及幼虫生活的其他场所。多散产,不成卵块。植食性瘿蚊中,许多种类为害林木、农作物和经济作物。捕食性种类常为害虫的天敌,有益于人类。
