国家一级保护动物
斑海豹体粗圆呈纺锤形，体重20-30千克。全身被短毛，背部蓝灰色，腹部乳黄色，带有蓝黑色斑点。头近圆形，眼大而圆。无外耳廓。吻短而宽，上唇触须长而粗硬，呈念珠状。四肢均具5趾，趾间有蹼，形成鳍状具锋利爪；后鳍肢大，向后延伸，尾短小而扁平。雌性有一对乳房。毛色随年龄和季节发生变化，幼兽色深，成兽色浅。初生仔有一层具保护作用的白色绒毛。
生活在寒温带海洋中，除产仔、休息和换毛季节需到冰上、沙滩或岩礁上之外，其余时间都在海中游泳、取食或嬉戏。斑海豹在冰上产仔，当冰融化之后，幼兽才开始独立在水中生活。繁殖期不集群，仔兽出生后，组成家庭群，哺乳期过后，家庭群结束。少数繁殖期推后的个体则不得不在沿岸的沙滩上产仔。斑海豹食物以鱼类为主，也食甲壳类及头足类。
