| 海豹科 Phocidae；seals 鳍足目的一科。身体肥胖而圆，体型呈纺锤状；头圆，颈粗，头上无外耳壳；四肢短而宽，具5趾，均呈鳍状，但后肢和尾相连在一起，永远向后，故上陆后不能步行；牙齿尖利。共12属19种。广泛分布于世界各大洋，在北半球寒带海域多，在南极和温带海域少。海豹类最大的种类为象海豹，雄性体长6 米，体重达3000千克，并有长30厘米的鼻子，可以自由伸缩。皮粗，体被毛稀少，皮下有厚脂肪层。以鱼类为主食。吼声洪亮。配偶方式为一雄多雌。从前在南太平洋、南极数量多，现数量已稀少。在中国辽宁、山东等省沿岸最常见是港海豹，全身灰黄色，布满棕黑色斑点，颇似豹的斑纹。体长1～1.5米，体重50千克。以鱼类为主食，兼食贝类。在渤海湾内，3～4月跟踪黄鱼群南移，冬季又随鲮鱼北上。港海豹的睡眠，以及繁殖期间的交配、产仔、育幼等，均在沿岸、岛屿或冰块上进行。海豹在水内能灵活上升到水面呼吸，俯仰均能游泳，但上陆后则行动缓慢、笨拙，只能匍匐蠕动，拖曳前进。每年2月，港海豹在大块浮冰上产仔，每产1仔，初生幼海豹遍体白色，为天然保护色。雌海豹的妊娠期8～9个月。港海豹皮和油脂均可利用。因数量减少，在中国已列为保护动物。
