吉布生沙漠位于大沙沙漠和维多利亚沙漠之间，因澳大利亚探险家吉布生而得名。他在1874年试图穿越这个沙漠，但在寻找水源时死去。此处地貌主要是起伏的砂砾层，在某些地区有红沙丘陵，成为干土粒平原。有些由岩石构成，有些则是由岛山从平坦的平原突出。失望湖坐落在沙漠西部，是个大盐湖，吸引了大量水鸟。白昼气温在夏季平均为33℃～42℃，冬季则为18℃～23℃。降雨极不稳定，多数来自偶然的雷雨，每年大约由二三十回，植被斑驳。在常见的三齿稃草旁边还有无脉金合欢（金合欢的一种），为此处带来一抹绿意，另有各色花朵，如黄松果菊，会在雨后冒出。红袋鼠也很常见。
