桌面套装的件数并不是固定的，因为如果完全固定件数就会限制人们DIY的乐趣。一般来说机箱、电源、鼠标、键盘是基本的组件，也就构成了4件的套装，不过由于显示器对计算机整体的外观影响也很大，因此目前主流的桌面套装都带有显示器，也就是我们所说的5件套装。
此外有些桌面套装会带有音箱，构成6件套装，或者为便于使用者选择，音箱可以是选购的。
考虑到光驱面板和机箱的协调性，有些厂商也生产带有光驱的7件套装，不过由于使用者对光驱的选择带有很大不确定性，因此这类套装并不常见。
