佛教传入中国后，佛经译本和中国佛教著作积累渐多，为了便于检索阅读，类钞纂集之作应时而起。先见于晋末，至梁而益盛。《经律异相》正是这种情况下的产物。该书按照出世间的三乘圣者（佛、菩萨、声闻缘觉）和在世间的五趣众生（天、人、鬼、畜生、地狱）的划分，撮钞经律故实，以类相属，分天、地、佛、诸释、菩萨、僧、诸国王、居士、贾客、庶人、鬼神、畜生、地狱等22部。旨在于显示佛教境界的广大、行果的殊妙，以引起人们对佛教的敬信。
该书基本上是直接钞录经律原文类编而成。引用的经律典籍相当广泛。据统计，属于已佚失而赖以传存的经籍约有 140余种，如《三乘名教经》、《天帝释受戒经》、《悉鞞梨天子诸佛说偈经》、《过去弹琴人经》、《折服罗汉经》等。其体例和内容为此后佛教类书之先河。唐道世的《法苑珠林》和《诸经要集》即以此为基础而进行编纂的。
