黄岩模具产业有近50年的历史，产业基础扎实，特色优势明显。二十世纪五十年代中期，出现了第一家专业模具企业，生产一些小型简单的塑料模具。70年代初，办起了20余家小规模的乡镇企业。80年代后，改革开放的政策调动了广大群众办企业的积极性，大量个体、民营模具加工企业应运而生。1986年,机械工业部副部长杨铿来黄岩考察时，对黄岩模具行业作了高度的评价，誉之为“模具之乡”。进入90年代后，各模具企业加大技术改造力度，积极培养、引进专业技术人才，加强内部管理，大胆实施体制创新，黄岩模具产业得到了快速提升。2002年11月经浙江省科技厅批准建立“黄岩塑料模具省级高新技术产业基地”，2003年7月9日经科技部批准为“国家火炬计划黄岩塑料模具产业基地”。
