    天体经过观测者的子午圈。当经过北天极、天顶、南天极所在的那一半子午圈时,天体到达最高位置,称为上中天;当经过北天极、天底、南天极所在的那一半子午圈时,天体到达最低位置 ,称为下中天 。恒星过上中天 ,其 时角为零,这一瞬间的地方恒星时等于其赤经,而且这时地方纬度与恒星的天顶距和赤纬有最简单的关系。所以经典的时间和纬度测量大多观测过上中天的恒星。
