在进行红外天文观测中，为了抑制来自天空和望远镜背景的干扰，也为了使天体的辐射变为交流信号以便处理，在红外望远镜中广泛采用调制技术。一般是调幅，即对天体的红外辐射(在投到探测器之前)以低频进行方波调制,探测器交替得到"源信号加背景"和"背景",后面的电子线路放大的是二者之差，这样就把微弱的"源信号"从强的背景起伏中检测出来。用在红外望远镜中的调制通常有三种方式：①摆动望远镜的主镜（这是最理想的）；②摆动望远镜的副镜；③安置焦平面调制器（斩波器），即在焦平面前一点，设置旋转或平移的小反光镜系统。这三种方式都是为了快速地交替观测天空两个相邻位置，获得调制信号差。摆动大口径望远镜的主镜很不容易，实际上最常用的是后两种方式，这可以用不同的光学机械装置和电路来加以实现。对调制器的要求是：调制函数应尽可能接近于方波，调制交替的两个最终状态应当很稳定，调制频率应等于所用红外探测器的最佳调制频率，以获得最大的输出信噪比。红外调制技术也广泛应用于军事工业和尖端科学的红外系统中，它们除采用调幅外，还采用调频、调相和脉冲编码等方式。
