      英国海军元帅,伯爵。1884年参加海军。1896~1898年,参加入侵埃及和苏丹的战争。1900年,参加八国联军侵华战争。1910年,晋升为海军少将。1913年,任英海军战斗巡洋舰分舰队司令。第一次世界大战期间,在黑尔戈兰湾的袭击战中,有力地支援了突击舰队,击沉德舰4艘,英方无损失;在多格浅滩海面的拦截战中,率战列巡洋舰切断德舰队的退路,击沉德"布吕歇尔"号战列巡洋舰;在日德兰海战中,率先迎战德公海舰队。1916年12月,任英大舰队司令。1919~1927年,任海军大臣。
