依靠供电线圈产生的电磁力驱动活动铁芯使阀瓣启闭的阀门。通电前，阀门处于常闭（或常开）状态，通电后电磁力驱动活动铁芯，使阀门立即开启（或关闭）。电磁阀的特点是动作迅速、结构简单、操作简便。它主要用于自动截断、接通或切换流体流向。因电磁力和活动铁芯的动作行程都较小，这种阀门的公称通径一般不超过80毫米。电磁阀有多种结构，一般分为无填料型和有填料型两类（见图）。无填料型电磁阀不用填料密封，套管内充满流体，除适用于一般流体外，更适用于氦、氟利昂（见制冷剂）和氨等贵重或有毒流体。有填料型电磁阀因使用填料，流体不与套管和铁芯等接触，大多用于高温、低温或强腐蚀性流体，但因有填料函，体积较大，且增加阀杆运动的摩擦力，故应用较少。电磁阀的电源有交流、直流之分。用交流电的电磁阀的动作特别快，但易发热、启闭力较小。用直流电的电磁阀不易发热，启闭力较大，但动作没有交流的快。
