磁性物质在外磁场的作用下,其磁熵变为`\DeltaS_m(T,bb{H})=int_{H_1}^{H_2}(\frac{\partialM}{\partialT})_Hdbb{H}`,其中M为磁性物质的自发磁化强度,由M(T,H)的计算可知ΔSm∝J(J 1)×g2/(T-Tc)2),亦即角动量J、朗德因子g和居里点温度Tc决定了磁熵变ΔSm,尤其是Tc。将Tc在室温附近的磁性材料作为制冷工质,可以在温度接近Tc的温区中得到很大的磁熵变,由ΔQ=TΔS即获得了室温区的制冷量。20世纪70年代后期人们利用金属钆及其合金作为工质,在0~7Tesla的磁场中循环得到了制冷的效果。近年来国际上利用Gd5(Si2Ge2)合金取得了更好的结果,在钙钛矿结构的LaCaSrMnO的锰系氧化物中,由于其不同的组分有不同的居里点温度而成为一种很有前途的磁制冷工质。
