8世纪初，信奉伊斯兰教的阿拉伯人占领比利尼斯半岛，并从西亚带来当时先进的建筑物类型，型制和手法，10世纪后，伊斯兰国家分裂，被西班牙天主教徒逐个消灭。但伊斯兰的建筑，由于水平远高于当时西班牙天主教地区的，所以对西班牙建筑保持着很强烈的影响。
西班牙格兰纳达的阿尔罕布拉宫，是伊斯兰世界中保存得比较好的一所宫殿。它位于一个地势险要的小山上，有一圈3500米长的红石围墙蜿蜒于浓荫之中，沿墙耸立着高高低低的方塔。围墙的大门叫公正门，在南边，君主在这里审理诉讼。宫殿偏于北面，它以两个互相垂直的长方形院子为中心，南北向的叫石榴院，以朝觐仪式为主，比较肃穆。东西向的叫狮子院，比较奢华，是后妃们住的地方。
建造阿尔罕布拉宫的时候，西班牙的伊斯兰国家已经十分窘蹙。格兰纳达王国臣服于西班牙的天主教君主，偏安一隅，屈辱求存。面临着不可挽回的没落，一种无可奈何的哀愁笼罩着宫廷。这就造成了阿尔罕布拉宫的艺术风格，精致而柔靡，绚丽而忧郁，亲切而惝恍。
