中国现代高等美术院校。院址在湖北省武汉市。其前身是武昌艺术专科学校。1949年以后，武昌艺术专科学校经过多次院系调整，其美术部分先后并入湖北省教育学院艺术系和中原大学文艺学院，以后又经过不断更替，先后成为华中师范学院、武汉艺术师范学院、湖北艺术学院等院校的一个系或一个分部，至1985年改建为湖北美术学院。
湖北美术学院在教学上，始终坚持计划教学，深入生活，通过艺术实践检验教学等方针，几十年来，为国家培养了一大批美术专业人才。
湖北美术学院现设:美术系(下设中国画、油画、版画、雕塑等专业)、工艺美术系(下有染织美术设计、装潢美术设计、环境美术设计、服装设计、工艺品造型设计等专业)、 美术师范系（学制分2年、3年或4年制）。该院还招收各学科的硕士研究生，设置中等美术专业部，并举办各种进修、培训班。该院现有学生320余人,教职工182人，历任院长有张中光、尚扬。
