1966年在华盛顿举行的第13届大会上决定采用现名。国际社会福利协会的宗旨是促进人类的幸福，工作方法主要是进行有关研究和举办研讨会，探求人类社会发展的趋势及社会变迁带来的影响，谋求保障人类得以幸福生活的策略。国际社会福利协会是联合国教科文组织、联合国儿童基金会、世界卫生组织及国际劳工组织的咨询机构。它与国际社会工作学校联合会、国际社会工作者联盟共同出版《国际社会工作》季刊。
国际社会福利协会的会员共分两类：①以国家为单位,现有国家会员近100个，分布于世界各大洲；②以组织为单位，现有30多个国际性民间组织参加协会。国际社会福利协会每两年举行一次大会。会议主题大多涉及社会福利方面最为人们关注的问题。参加大会的代表多为各国负责推行社会福利政策的官员和专家。会议代表除参与大会主题讨论外，还报告本国社会福利的发展概况。
