英国工程师，蒸汽机发明人之一。1663年 2月24日生于达特茅斯一个商人家庭，1729年8月5日在伦敦去世。纽科门幼年仅受过初等教育，少年时代做过锻工。17世纪80年代同J.卡利合伙经营铁器，后来共同研制蒸汽机，并于1705年取得"冷凝进入活塞下部的蒸汽和把活塞与连杆联接以产生可变运动"的专利权。此后，纽科门继续改进蒸汽机，于1712年首次制成可供实用的大气式蒸汽机，被称为纽科门蒸汽机。这台蒸汽机的汽缸活塞直径为12英寸（30.48厘米），每分钟往复 12次，功率为5.5马力(4.04千瓦）。但热效率低，燃料消耗量大，仅适用于煤矿等燃料充足的地方。后来经过改进，他的蒸汽机被欧洲一些国家采用。纽科门蒸汽机被广泛应用60多年，在J.瓦特完善蒸汽机的发明后很长时间还在使用。纽科门蒸汽机是第一个可供实用的蒸汽机。他为后来蒸汽机的发展和完善奠定了基础。
