各国模式识别方面专家和团体的国际性学术组织，缩写IAPR。1978年成立。第一任主席是美国普度大学教授傅京孙。它是国际信息处理联合会（IFIP）成员，现有23个会员国。学会设有执行委员会、理事会和常务委员会。理事会由各会员国代表组成。1980年在迈阿密举行第五届会议期间，中国自动化学会模式识别与机器智能专业委员会正式加入学会，并有一名代表参加理事会。1982年第六届会议期间成立12个专业委员会：①统计模式识别技术;②结构及句法模式识别；③未定;④图像理解技术;⑤标准和软件；⑥特定目的体系结构;⑦遥感方面应用；⑧工业方面应用（分为机器人与自动化和工业中的一般应用两个分会）;⑨生物医学模式识别;⑩地图及线划图形处理的应用;文本处理的应用;自动语言识别。学会从1978年起出版定期交流的通讯，1983年后正式出版《模式识别通讯》。
