台湾省水能资源最丰富又得到充分开发的梯级水电站。位于台湾中西部。大甲溪发源于中央山脉，向西注入南海，全长124km，平均坡降1:60。流域面积1272km2，年雨量1500～2500mm之间。流域地形可分成三区:上游段开扩平坦，森林茂密；中游段多山，河道狭窄，对水电开发十分有利；下游段为大片平原和台中市等工业城市，需要灌溉和供水。自20世纪50年代初开始，得到重点开发，到70年代末，全溪流已建成4座梯级水电站和1座供工农业用水的水库（见图），其主要特性指标见表。
梯级中各电站总装机容量达87.4kW。大甲溪的开发，不仅为地区工农业提供了大量电力，还为防洪和农田灌溉、城市供水等发挥了重大作用。
