口径有线膛枪与滑膛枪之分
线膛枪：线膛枪枪管内有膛线，凸起的为阳线，凹下的为阴线。其口径指两条相对的阳线之间的垂直距离。注意：弹头直径均大于口径，这样弹头才能嵌入膛线旋转并起到闭气的作用。如中国5.8mm口径步枪，弹头直径为6mm。
口径一般用毫米或英寸来表示，如7.62mm、0.45英寸。在英文中，常常省略0及英寸，写作.45口径或干脆写作45口径，读作点四五或四五口径。有些编辑不懂此表示方法，直接在45、38后加上mm，生生造出38mm之粗的手枪，贻笑大方。

滑膛枪：滑膛枪以号数来表示。以一磅纯铅（453.5g）制作出偶数个相等的球体，正好能让一个小球通过枪膛的滑膛枪，即以小球的个数命名。如12号滑膛枪是以一磅纯铅制作出12个小球，并恰好可以通过枪膛。枪口直径为18.5mm
滑膛枪不仅可以发射独弹，还可以发射霰弹，集束箭弹，催泪弹，染色弹，非致命动能弹等多种弹种。
