现代布雷方式以潜艇布雷最为隐蔽，为此很多国家都研制了能穿越敌方防潜设施的潜布自航水雷。所谓自航，就是布雷潜艇可在距离预定布雷水域10千米以外，将水雷从潜艇的鱼雷管中发射出去，利用水雷自身的动力装置航行一段距离后，到达预定水域。
目前世界最为著名的自航水雷是美国的 mk67。该水雷由 mk37鱼雷改装而成，拆除了鱼雷的战斗部，装上包括雷管、保险装置、点火装置或目标探测装置和电池及主炸药的装药段，并对鱼雷的制导和控制机构也加以改装。改装后的mk67水雷长 4.9米，直径 485毫米，重754千克，内有装药148.5千克。
mk67是美国海军为在敌人控制的水域秘密作战而设计的多感应机动水雷，它可布放在100米深的浅海。发射后，&127;未打开保险的水雷由鱼雷推进到预定位置，再沉人海底并自动打开保险，等待目标。mk67水雷的航程最大可达20千米。
