游人过“回心石”后,即是华山第一险道——千尺幢和百尺峡,千尺幢往上看为一线天,往下望如深井,它形如裂隙,四壁直立,凿石为梯,游人经此,如同穿行井中,上有青天召唤,下有阴风催促,到达幢口攀出井外,顿有超尘脱俗之感。 在山崖极陡处开出的一条小路,共370多磴石级,石级的宽度只能容纳一个人上下,两旁挂着铁索,人们手攀铁索,一步步向上登,往上看,只见一线天开;往下看,就像站在深井上。千尺幢的顶端,就像井口一样。这里的崖壁上刻有“太华咽喉”、“气吞东瀛”的字样。其形势真像咽喉一样的险要。当小心翼翼的游人,手脚并用地爬上千尺幢,再往前走,还有一处险路──百尺峡。出峡,过仙人桥 ,前面又是一段险路“老君犁沟”,传说是太上老君牵来自己的青牛,在这个陡壁处犁出的一条小路。走完这段有500多个石级的“老君犁沟”,就登上了海拔1500多米的北峰。这里四面悬崖绝壁,恰如一座平台,因而又叫云台峰。 过千尺幢,马上就是百尺峡,虽没有千尺幢那么长,仅46米,石阶91级,但仍是华山天险之一。这里势危坡陡,石壁峭立,通道狭窄,且有悬石,摇摇欲坠。游人至此都心惊胆颤。明顾端木有诗状其险曰:“幢去峡复来,天险不可瞬。虽云百尺峡,一尺一千仞。” 千尺幢、百尺峡的台阶都是从明末清初开始凿的,民国时几经加固,解放后又多次修整。一九八五年又凿为复道,游人上下各行其道。
