天兴潭又名三悬潭，位在嵊县西南面，源出东阳西溪。天兴潭地处海拔216 米的深山野岙，三里之外即闻瀑布声，然而十步之隔尚不见其尊容。因为它隐藏在一个狭窄如缝，壁高参天的凹谷中。
天兴潭由互相关连的三处深潭组成，因名“三悬潭”。潭与潭距离很近，但瀑布落差分明。三悬潭瀑布以神秘和幽奇著称。所谓三潭者，即瀑布有三泄，因三泄而生三潭：里潭、中潭、外潭。诗人谢灵运《发归濑三瀑布望两溪》诗中所谓“濑三”者，即指三悬潭。
