（术语）不立文字祖祖本传之禅也，对楞伽经所说之如来禅而立此称。即以如来禅为教内未了之禅，以祖师禅为教外别传至极之禅也。传灯录十一（仰山章）曰：“师问香严：师弟近日见处如何？严曰：某甲卒说不得，乃有偈曰：去年贫未是贫，今年贫始是贫；去年贫无卓锥之地，今年贫锥也无。师曰：汝只得如来禅。未得祖师禅。”
