描述ViolaL.堇菜属，堇菜科，约500种，分布于全球，主产地为北温带，我国约120种，南北均有分布，有些供观赏用。多年生草本，稀为亚灌木，无茎或有茎；叶互生或基生，有齿或深裂；托叶宿存；花两性，单生、腋生或生于花葶上，具梗，两侧对称，有2种类型的花，生于春季的有花瓣，生于夏季的无花瓣（名闭花），但能产生种子；萼片5，基部延伸；花瓣5，下面一枚最大，基部有距；雄蕊5，下面2枚有腺状附属体突伸于距内，花药环生于雌蕊的周围，药隔顶端具膜质附属体；子房上位，1室，有胚珠多数生于3个侧膜胎座上；蒴果3瓣裂；果瓣舟状而有厚而硬的龙骨，当薄的部分干燥而收缩时，它就向外弯曲将种子射出。
