下丘脑的细胞一方面像其他神经细胞那样接受神经递质的刺激或抑制;另一方面还能接受来自血循环转运的内分泌信号,但它不产生其他神经细胞那样的神经反应,而是将神经性刺激的信号转换成为产生内分泌激素的信号,以后将这种激素释入血循环中,通过血液达到受调节的器官,调节其生理功能,故下丘脑的细胞亦称为神经内分泌细胞。下丘脑小细胞系分泌生育调节激素,即促性腺激素释放激素和生长激素释放抑制激素。下丘脑大细胞系分泌增压素和催产素。
