本症为甲状腺亢进症的特殊表现之一。分浸润性及非浸润性两种。浸润性者眼球突出明显，视力减退、复视等，结合膜充血水肿，眼睑不能闭合，常伴有角膜炎和溃疡，多为双侧，常一侧较重。病人有眼内异物感、畏光、流泪与烧痛，头痛其发生原因与自身免疫有关，使球后组织增生、水肿、体积增加。
