巴西诗人、小说家。生于米纳斯吉拉斯州的伊塔比拉。1925年在贝洛奥里藏特创办期刊《杂志》，它后来成为这个州现代主义诗歌运动的喉舌。他当过新闻记者、教育部官员。1930年第一部诗集《一些诗》出版，显示其现代主义诗歌创作达到成熟的阶段。诗歌以日常生活为题材，探索个人心灵的孤寂和相互之间的隔膜，然而充满嘲讽和幽默，有时流露悲观、遁世和怀疑情绪；风格与传统的堆砌、雕琢词藻相反,简短、朴素,不讲究韵律，起初带点游戏文章的味道,后来逐渐深刻,具有独特的韵味。他的诗集还有《心灵的沼泽》(1934)、《世界的感情》(1940)、《诗集》（1942）、《人民的玫瑰》(1945)、《直到现在的诗歌》(1947)。
从1947年出版的《新诗集》开始，他的作品显示出哲理诗的倾向,感情泠漠,风格更趋于朴素、淡泊。后期诗集有《明晰的谜》(1951)、《露天里的农夫》(1954)、《在野外过的生活》(1959)和《事件的教训》(1962)。
他还著有短篇小说集《米纳斯的忏悔》（1944）、《经理》(1945)、《学习的故事》(1951)、《在岛上散步》(1952)、《说吧，杏树》和诗歌散文合集《何塞及其他》(1967)。他的短篇小说的主题思想是表现人的一生不能得到全面的经验，一切都是支离破碎，人与人之间永远无法理解等等。
