描述AchyranthesL.牛膝属,苋科,约15种,分布于两半球热带和亚热带地区,我国有3种,分布极广,其中牛膝A.bidentataBl.和土牛膝A.asperaL.2种,均入药。粗壮草本;叶对生;花两性,为单生或分枝的穗状花序,花后下反苞片和小苞片刺状;花被片4或5;花丝基部合生;退化雄蕊与雄蕊互生,四方形,有齿或有睫毛;子房长椭圆形,有胚珠1颗;果为一长椭圆形或阔卵形的胞果,内有种子1粒,和花萼及小苞片同时脱落。
