补充资料：哈雷慧星
1985年7月2日，欧洲航天局发射了一颗以探测哈雷慧星为目的的“乔托”探测器。慧头是个漆黑的“脏雪球”就是它告诉人们的。1986年3月，“乔托”慧星探测器接近哈雷慧星。探测器是以地球的公转轨道飞行的，当运行到公转的轨道的四分之三位置时，与哈雷慧星会合。这时探测器离慧只有500公里，而离地球却达1亿多公里。
哈雷慧星是人类最早发现的一颗周期慧星。1682年英国天文学家哈雷（EdmundHalley）观测到这个太阳系中最明亮最活跃的慧星，并推算哈雷慧星每隔76年到达离地球最近点一次。它的回归是人们十分关注的一种天文现象。1986年2月9日是本世纪第二次也是最后一次回归地球，这是探测的一个难得机会。因此世界上一些国家纷纷研制发射探测器，在哈雷慧星飞离地球最近的1985年11月27日和1986年4月11日前后窥探它的真实面貌。
