形态特征:百合科重楼属多年生草本植物，高35-100厘米。根状茎粗厚，直径1-2厘米。茎常带紫红色。叶(5-)7-10枚轮生，长圆形、椭圆形至倒卵状披针形，长7-15厘米，宽2.5-5厘米，具长2-6毫米的红色柄。4-7月开花，顶生1朵花，外轮花被片绿色，(3-)4-6枚，狭卵状披针形,长(3-)4-7厘米;内轮花被片狭条形，常比外轮长。蒴果紫色，圆球形，直径1.5-2.5厘米。
生境分布:生于海拔1800-3200米的林下。分布于西藏东南部、云南、四川和贵州。不丹、锡金、尼泊尔和越南也有。
用途:根状茎药用，清热解毒、散结消肿,治痈肿肺痨久咳、跌打损伤、蛇虫咬伤、淋巴结核、骨髓炎等症是云南白药的主要成分之-。
