许多树木都会越长越粗，可是竹子就不同了。竹子也能生长许多年，但是它的茎一出土面，就不再长粗了。年龄再大，也只能长这么粗。这是什么原因呢？
因为竹子是单子叶植物，而一般树木大多是双子叶植物。单子叶植物的茎是没有形成层。
如果把双子叶植物的茎切成很薄的薄片，放在显微镜下面观察可以看到一个一个维管束，维管束的外层是韧皮部，内层是木质部，在韧皮部与木质部之间夹着一层薄薄的形成层。它每年都会进行细胞分裂，产生新的韧皮部和木质部，于是茎才一年一年粗起来。
如果把单子叶植物的茎横切成薄片放在显微镜下面观察，也可以看到一个一个的维管束，维管束的外层同样是韧层部，内层是木质部，但是韧皮部与木质部之间还没有形成层。所以单子叶植物的茎只有在开始长出来的时候能够长粗，到一定程度后就不会长了。除了竹子之外，小麦、水稻、高粱、玉米等等都是单子叶植物，所以它们的茎到一定程度后就不再长粗了。
