衣原体目衣原体科的唯一属。严格细胞内寄生、有独特发育周期的革兰氏染色阴性球形微生物。无运动性。细胞壁化学组成与革兰氏阴性菌相似,代谢活性弱,在适宜环境中,可分解葡萄糖、丙酮酸或谷氨酸,产生二氧化碳,也能合成某些脂类。至今衣原体还不能在细胞外繁殖,可在鸡胚卵黄囊或脊椎动物组织培养中生长。四环素、青霉素可抑制其繁殖。DNA中的G+C克分子含量为39~45%。感染范围广,主要感染人、禽、牛、羊等。引起人的眼、泌尿生殖道和呼吸道疾患;引起禽的呼吸道和全身性感染;引起哺乳动物的呼吸道、胎盘、关节和肠道疾患。某些株可在不同宿主间交叉感染,尤其是在鸟和人类间。本属下有沙眼衣原体和鹦鹉热衣原体两个种。前者为中国微生物学家汤飞凡等于1956年应用鸡胚卵黄囊接种法首先分离成功。
