德意志联邦共和国电影导演。1910年11月12日生于弗赖堡。父亲是著名摄影师。自1931年开始独立导演影片《单身汉的乐园》。此后主要拍摄一些喜剧片和音乐喜剧片,经常与德国著名喜剧演员H.吕曼合作,拍了《乌拉,我是爸爸》(1939)、《倒霉的水手克瓦克斯》(1941)等。他在1958年导演的抨击法西斯主义的讽刺片《神童》相当成功，获得1959年莫斯科国际电影节的金质奖。于1961年拍摄的讽刺喜剧片《古堡幽灵》，也在当年的莫斯科国际电影节获得最佳喜剧片奖。他也曾把T.曼的小说《骗子费利克斯·克鲁尔的自白》搬上银幕（1957）。霍夫曼是联邦德国刘别谦奖的第一个获得者。
