美国电影演员。1937年8月8日生于洛杉矶。19岁离开大学加入剧团。曾到纽约谋求演员工作，到处碰壁，当过看门人和护士，后来在电视和流动剧团里扮演一些次要角色。1965年曾获得最佳戏剧演员奥比奖。1967年好莱坞导演M.尼科尔斯，请他在《毕业生》一片中担任主角。获得很大成功。霍夫曼虽跃上明星宝座，但仍一直坚持舞台表演。1969年他在《午夜牛郎》一片中扮演一个患肺病的流浪汉，又获得好评。此后，他创造了不同类型的各种人物，如《小大人》(1970)中被印第安人抚育成人的白人；《蝴蝶》(1973)中的囚犯；《伦尼》(1974)中的喜剧演员；《总统班底》(1976)中的记者。在1979年的《克莱默夫妇》中，霍夫曼的表演极为出色，获得了奥斯卡最佳男演员奖。1982年他在《宝贝儿》中扮演一个为了谋生不得不男扮女装的演员，得到奥斯卡最佳男演员提名。1988年因《雨人》获第61届奥斯卡最佳男演员奖，他成功地扮演了一个弱智却又具有特殊记忆的人。
