【来源】
为胡椒科植物荜茇的根，植物形态详"荜茇"条。
【化学成分】
根含胡椒碱、荜茇明碱、荜茇明宁碱。茎含荜茇明碱。
【药理作用】
荜茇明碱有明显降低狗血压的作用，阿托品及抗组织胺药对其降压作用没有影响。于第二颈椎处横切脊髓后，降压作用仍然保持。对呼吸的频率及深度均无影响。对兔和大鼠回肠可抑制其张力和收缩力最后麻痹，洗去药物可以恢复。胡椒碱的药理见"荜茇"条。

《本草拾遗》:"味辛，温，无毒。"
【功用主治】
《本草拾遗》:"主五劳七伤，阴汗，核肿。""冷气呕逆，心腹胀满，食不消，寒疝核肿，妇人内冷无子。治腰肾冷，除血气。"
【用法与用量】
内服:煎汤，0.5～1钱，或入丸、散。
